5th Congress of the World Union of Lasallian Former Students (UMAEL)
The 5th Congress of the World Union of Lasallian Former Students (UMAEL) was held from October 26th to 30th in Manila, Philippines. The slogan for the event was “ONE LA SALLE, ¡ÁNIMO LA SALLE!” More than 500 delegates from the different federations and associations from various countries participated in the event, including Venezuela, France, Singapore, Japan, Spain, Madagascar, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Mexico and Argentina. This year the Philippines celebrates 100 years of Lasallian presence in the country. During the General Assembly a new Executive Committee was named and the new President is Mr. HENRY ATAYDE (Philippines) who succeeds Mr. Sergio Casas (Mexico).
Various talks helped in taking an in-depth look at mission and the responsibility of former students in the Lasallian Mission today. Lasallian Schools educate nearly one million students with the help of 80,000 teachers in 79 countries.
Each day the participants visited a different University or educational center outside of Manila in surrounding cities.
From Rome Brothers Thomas Johnson (Vicar General), Claude Reinhardt (General Councillor), David Hawke (General Councillor) and Charles Kitson (Secretary for the Lasallian Family and Association) all participated in the event.
This association continues to make efforts in keeping alive its slogan “We enter to learn, we leave to serve” in all the countries where it exists.
